The idea is very basic -
+ Accentuate the positive aspects of being an older person.
+ Provide a radio station for older people to run themselves.
+ Make the station unique by playing in records made before 1960.
We operate on a small, tight budget. Our income originates from diverse sources, which includes advertising local businesses, donations from listeners and sponsorship of programmes.
We have received small funding grants from local councils, the National Lottery, Age Concern and local businesses.
The Angel Radio team numbers 70+ volunteers.
Some are in their 90s, several are in their 80s, most are over 60.
Most have never worked in radio before.
Most are fit and active.
Some have disabilities, including blind, deaf, arthritic,
Parkinson's and stroke victims.
All do as much as they feel comfortable with.
Our first broadcast for older people was a 6-day licence in February 1999 in Portsmouth on 87.7 FM.
Our current radio project went on air in Havant in March 2002 on 101.1MHz FM providing entertainment, information and stimulation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We now broadcast to Portsmouth, Havant & Gosport on 89.3 FM. Also on digital radio to Aldershot, Brighton, Birmingham, Cambridge, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, London, Norwich and Woking.
