Saturday 25th January .... Ryde Social Heritage Group invites members, friends, Angel Radio listeners and everyone, to carry out the annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch at Ryde Cemetery. Please go along to the Ryde Cemetery Heritage & Learning Centre, West Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, from 11am to 1pm, where they will provide all the materials you will need, for an hour’s bird watching in the Cemetery grounds. There will also be reference books available to help you identify any birds you are unsure of. Warming drinks of Tea, Coffee, and Soup, will be available. All the information will be collated and sent to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to help with their national survey.

A live-action promenade performance that takes you on a time-travelling journey back to the Victorian era, to experience life under siege as the garrison struggles to repel the dreaded French invasion.  Fort Nelson was built during the Victorian era as part of a ring of defences around the Royal Naval Dockyard in Portsmouth. Friday 7th February is the anniversary of Charles Dickens's birth. Between 10.30  and 11am the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth will hang a wreath on the front door of the house in which Dickens was born, this being an annual tradition.  The house, which is now the Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum in Old Commercial Road, will be open to the public, free of charge, from 11 am to 5 pm, and members of the Dickens Fellowship will be reading passages from the novels of DIckens  each hour.  At 12 noon, there will be a further ceremony in Guildhall Square, where the Lord mayor will put a garland around the neck of the statue of Dickens. All are welcome to attend these events.

Dr. Nicholas Cambridge will be giving a lecture entitled "Dickens and Medicine".  Parking will be available in the Grammar School car park across the road from the church, but people using this opportunity must leave the car park by 9.15 pm, as the gates will then be closed.  All are welcome, and admission is free.
